Azores approve new walking routes

Nine new walking routes were approved in the Azores regional network. The regional network of walking routes now counts 95 official walking routes, an increase of 75km, reaching a total length of 830 km. Among the walking routes is the “Grande Rota” on Terceira island, with about 34 km, which brings to 7 the total number of Grandes Routes in the archipelago. The promoters of the new proposals, mostly municipalities and parish councils, have 12 months to implement the completed paths, and some new proposals are expected to be opened later this summer. The Regional Tourism office is fully responsible for implementing the signage, information panels and communication of these new 106.3 km of walking routes. The network of walking routes in the Azores is now strengthened, “enhancing the tourist product of hiking, which is considered one of the core products and most demanded by those visiting the destination”. In addition to the diversification of walking routes, with itineraries that allow you to enjoy new landscapes, “the new trails will contribute to a better distribution of tourist flows across the nine islands of the Azores”, the regional government said in a statement. The current Pedestrian Route Monitoring Committee, which handles the approval of the routes, is met by a representative of each of the following entities: Regional Tourism office, who presides; Regional for Environment and Climate Change office; Regional for Forest Resources office, Association of Municipalities of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Azores Tourism Association, Association in the area of Pedestrianism, Regional Delegation of the National Association of Parishes. Azores can achieve the Gold certification in three years as a sustainable tourist destination

The Regional Director of Tourism, Rosa Costa, announced that the Azores are already working on the second-year validation of the silver certification of sustainable tourism destination by EarthCheck, believing that the Region can “achieve Gold Certification within three years”. In December 2019 the Azores achieved the sustainable tourist destination certification by Earth Check, according to the international standards of Global Sustainable Tourism Council. This achievement has placed the Azores “as a leading global destination in the field of sustainability, being the first and only archipelago in the world with this certification”. This achievement has placed the Azores “as a leading global destination in the field of sustainability, being the first and only archipelago in the world with this certification”. In the opinion of Rosa Costa, this achievement “reinforced the strategic positioning of the region, as a destination that combines its stunning nature, the authenticity of the customs and traditions of the population, contributing to the sustainable balance of the Region in the economic, social, cultural and environment, responding to current trends in international tourist demand for non-massified, nature-based and more sustainable destinations, where immersive, but respectful, contact with local communities is provided ”. The Regional Director of Tourism, in an interview with Nonangon’s magazine ‘Thinktech’, stated that in the Azores “there is a struggle to improve the tourism sector, which is facing enormous difficulties, never before”. “It is difficult to manage expectations about the future, but we must continue to have hope and continue to be resilient, aiming and working for the rapid recovery in the sector as soon as possible, in which tourism will be the protagonist, which may trigger the economic recovery in the Azores, due to its sectoral transversality”, she affirmed. She noted that the tourism sector “has been gaining great expression” in the Azores over the past few years, with a “very positive transversal performance for the Region”. She considered that the tourism figures in 2019 “are a reflection of the growth of the sector, where there are more than 3 million overnight stays and 100 million euros in tourism income in traditional hotels”. In the opinion of Rosa Costa, “the relaunch of Tourism” in the Region “will be guided by a strategy that combines Safety with Sustainability, guiding business models towards a service that values quality and the safety of tourists”. In her opinion, “destinations that rely on more positive, sustainable, non-mass tourism models and in contact with the outdoors and nature, will be better prepared to receive tourists safely, so the Azores are positioned in the line of ahead while choosing a holiday destination”. As Rosa Costa stated, “the Azores tourist destination is positioned as a destination of exuberant and exclusive nature, providing unique outdoor activities on land and at sea. It has a rich culture and gastronomy and provides immersive contact with the unique customs and experiences of the Azorean people”. In the opinion of the Regional Director of Tourism, “the first steps in tourism have already been taken and, now, we must be more ambitious, raising the goals through the application of policies and regulations at the level of environmental, economic and social sustainability, in a transversal way in the region. We have to identify and enhance our cultural assets as a tourist product and continue to work on accessibility, product and service qualification, reinforcing training”. “The premise of improving internal and external accessibility that guarantees tourist flows to the Region is essential for the development of tourism, as well as a surgical investment in priority markets and segments, so that tourists continue to be distributed throughout the islands of the Archipelago, and throughout the year, reducing the current marked seasonality and which continues in a consolidated way in the creation of wealth and employment”.“It is essential to increase the external promotion of the destination through various promotional actions aimed at the intended targets, namely through digital marketing, communicating the Azores as a tourist destination of a nature, sustainable and experiential”, she added in the same interview. Azores celebrated World Earth Day with an environmental awareness campaign, in an ‘online’ format, covering all schools in the Azores, from the Primary education to Secondary Education. This was an initiative of the Regional Secretariat for Transport, Tourism and Energy, through the Management Structure of the Sustainable Tourist Destination, Azores DMO, in partnership with the Regional Secretariat for Education, this collaboration was essential for the realization of this activity. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of the various environmental issues, and to share practical examples of the Azores as a sustainable destination, as well as to encourage domestic tourism in the region, since young people are opinion makers when choosing a holiday destination, and the Archipelago, as a tourist destination, is in line with proactive and experiential tourism, whose offer is based on a wide range of activities both on land and at sea. The action also had the purpose of creating a common conscience for the importance of the need to preserve the world’s natural resources, and for the urgency of adopting more responsible behaviors. There was a dynamic program throughout the day, which addressed various themes of sustainable tourism, and suggestions were also shared on how everyone can be a real agent of change in society through daily choices and behaviors. European Best Destinations appoint the Azores as a safe destinations for 2021

In 2021, the trust level in the Azores remains, and European Best Destinations has already considered it as one of the safest vacation destinations. When, in 2020, the travel and life habits of all of us changed dramatically, the Azores remained as a possibility for a safe, natural and sustainable experience. To reinforce the confidence of the Azorean islands when choosing where to spend their vacation in 2021, some criteria are considered: preventive measures, recommendations by the authorities when tourists arrive at hotels, shops and restaurants and distinction of the website for cultural and tourist promotion. At the origin of the certification is the commitment taken into account by all tourism entities in complying with the prevention norms, combined with a natural setting difficult to find elsewhere, and responsible and conscious hospitality. “The presentation of a screening test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, using the RT-PCR methodology, with a negative result on arrival, the many outdoor activities, contact with nature and always sustainable tourism make the Azores a destination mandatory nowadays, when those who come don’t have to worry, but relax and enjoy the experience ”, explains Luís Capdeville Botelho, CEO of the Azores Tourism Association, the certification states that all the efforts and work of the last few months of implementing measures that maintain confidence in the destination, and showing that there is a place in the world where it is possible to travel without apprehensions was worth it. The sustainable and natural component is also a decisive factor in this distinction. Due to all the conditions they offer to be able to enjoy in freedom and with plenty of space for everyone, the nine islands assert themselves as the perfect destination for moments of relaxation. From walks in full harmony with nature to surfing, diving and whale watching, through canyoning, it is always possible to collect adventures in a comfortable and relaxed way. In 2021, the Azores are still open to receive those who seek to take a deep breath and recharge their energy. Source: Ambitur
