Azorean government supports young people who commit to working in the archipelago

The Government of the Azores will grant between 2,000 and 8,000 euros to young people who commit to working in the archipelago for at least five years. The measure, whose regulations have been published in the Official Journal, is part of the ‘+ Jovem’ package, organized by the Regional Secretariat for Youth, Housing and Employment, and aims to attract and retain talent in the region. The amount of support varies according to academic level: 2,000 euros for bachelors, 5,000 euros for masters and 8,000 euros for doctors. 6th Natural Fibres Festival

The Natural Fibres Festival returns to the Old Boiler Orchard of Lagoa das Furnas on 3 and 4 August 2024. This event is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and innovation of regional handicrafts that use natural fibres as their raw material. With workshops, exhibitions and talks, the festival promotes ecological practices and local crafts. It’s an opportunity to discover unique products and value the Azorean cultural heritage. Azorean government investment improves Faial’s waste management capabilities

On 11 July 2024, the Regional Government of the Azores inaugurated the restructuring of the Waste Processing Centre (CPR) on the island of Faial. This investment aims to improve Faial’s waste management capacities, including the creation of specific composting areas for bio-waste from selective collection and the acquisition of equipment. The implementation of bio-waste selective collection systems is crucial for the Circular Economy, which promotes the closing of the material cycle and guarantees the quality of recyclables. In 2019, biodegradable municipal waste accounted for 47.81% of undifferentiated municipal waste in the Azores, demonstrating the importance of this initiative. The Azores are internationally recognized for their environmental quality, and the modernization of Waste Processing Centres is essential for the sustainable development of the region. Azores awarded “Best National Tourism Region” by Publituris

The Azores were honored as the “Best National Tourism Region” at the Publituris awards, reaffirming their prominent position on the Portuguese tourism scene. The Publituris Portugal Travel Awards 2024 took place in the city of Porto, in the presence of more than 400 people, and the prize awarded to the Azores was received by the Regional Director for Tourism, Rosa Costa. Lagoa celebrates International Plastic Bag Free Day

Lagoa Municipal Council, through CEFAL – Centro de Educação e Formação Ambiental de Lagoa, will be celebrating the International Day Without Plastic Bags for the sixth consecutive year on 3 July. The initiative includes the distribution of cloth bags to bathers at the Municipal Swimming Pool Complex and the Caloura Bathing Area, encouraging a reduction in the use of plastic bags and promoting sustainable alternatives. The cloth bags will have the message: “Thousands of marine animals die every year from suffocation and ingestion of plastic bags”, warning of the threat to marine life. This activity is part of the Blue Flag programmed, which this year highlights the theme “The Sea Needs Leaders!”, promoting the defense of marine ecosystems. Read more: HERE

Azores awarded “Revelation Destination” by AHRESP

The Azores were honored with the “Revelation Destination – Azores Routes” award by AHRESP (Hotel, Restaurant and Similar Association of Portugal), highlighting the ongoing work of the Regional Government in promoting the tourism sector. The Azores Routes – Cultural and Landscape Itineraries project, which includes the Whaling Route, the Volcanoes Route, the Wine Route and the Cheese Route, was created to diversify the tourist offer and highlight the cultural richness of the archipelago’s nine islands. EDA has European eel recovery project

EDA is currently involved in a European eel recovery project at the four mini-hydroelectric power stations installed in Ribeira Quente, in São Miguel, Azores. This project aims to restore and preserve the population of this endangered species in the region’s aquatic ecosystems. With initiatives focussed on improving water quality and creating suitable habitats, EDA intends to continue promoting the conservation of this important natural resource, contributing to the sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.
